Marisa's lightbulb went off in university while she was pursuing her undergraduate degree in theatre. After reading John Robbins'"Diet for a New World", she realized that there was a whole world of animal suffering of which she knew nothing about. Galvanized at that moment to advocate for animals and the environment, she attained her Masters in Environmental Studies, creating the short film, "Songs of the Earth".

From there she flailed about looking for any way to educate people about the widespread mistreatment of animals; she has volunteered with wildlife rehabilitation and cat rescues.

In 2004, when she and close friends kept encountering difficulties with ordering organic, vegan items from the States, they decided that what they needed was a Canadian purveyor of these items. Finding none, they decided to launch Comondi in 2005 to encourage more people to be aware of their purchasing habits and the impact their decisions have on other beings.
